Giving Constructive Feedback

Here is an outline of giving constructive feedback and video below which explains it in more detail.

A structure for giving feedback:

  1. Outline the positive intention (i.e. difficult situation, everyone doing their best, a challenging task). Express that this feedback comes from a place of help/support/care (i.e. doing this to support you, and make you better)

  2. Ask them 3 things: how they feel it went; what they were happy with; what they’d like to improve on.

  3. Then, if you agree with their analysis, say so. Or make additional comments or suggestions if you have any. Give them the confidence sandwich (e.g. what went well, what could be improved, what their good at)

  4. Follow up with them to make sure that they're well, that they have understood the feedback and action steps
